Colon: the superficial portions of the glands in a portion of the colon show neoplastic transformation characterized by the formation of anastomosed and contoured glands lined by a columnar epithelium and supported by a small amount of fibrovascular stroma. The epithelium of these neoplastic glands is more basophilic than the epithelium of the adjacent colonic glands. Their nucleus is large and has a more clumped chromatin than the nucleus of non-neoplastic glands. Mitoses are numerous. A few neoplastic glands are moderately distended by mucin. A few neoplastic cells are apoptotic. There is no evidence of invasion of the stroma. |
