This is the exocrine pancreas from a 563 day old male BALB/cByJ mouse. Note the normal acini to the right that consists of small well defined cells. These normal cells have apical granular eosinophilic cytoplasm and basilar nuclei. To the left are cells that are markedly dilated with eosinophilic granules. These are the areas of cytological alteration that some consider to be precancerous or carcinoma in situ like lesions. These rarely progress to neoplasms of the exocrine pancreas. 40x magnification. |
