Back of the tongue from a 371 day old male BALB/cByJ mouse. Note the inflammatory polyp with foreign material (hair). While this looks like a neoplasm, it is an inflammatory and abnormal wound healing response to the foreign body, hair shafts. What is interesting is that while most inbred strains get hair shafts embedded within the duct to these glands as a consequence of grooming, only a few respond by forming these inflammatory polyps. |
