This is a rhabdomyosarcoma in a 536 day old female mouse. This strain of mice develop rhabdomyosarcoma as they age in relatively high frequency. Note the pleomorphism of the cell population. Cross striations can be found in some of the better differentiated cells, which are best visualized using special stains. Straited muscle actin immunohistochemistry is further confirmation of the diagnosis. Rhabdomyosarcoma is in the spinal cord. The rhabdomyosarcoma invaded into and through the vertebral bodies, into the spinal canal, and compressed the spinal cord. |
