Fig. 3F. Gastric hamartoma: this is a polypoid/papillary mass, the stroma of which contains large numbers of alpha smooth muscle actin-positive cells interpreted as being smooth muscle fibers. These bundles of smooth muscle fibers surround and separate gastric glands that lack atypia.
The presence of bundles of smooth muscle fibers surrounding gastric glands is consistent with an hamartoma. This feature is also characteristic of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome which is a hereditary disorder characterized by gastrointestinal hamartomatous polyposis and mucocutaneous pigmentation. |
